Ocean freight

Ocean freight shipping durations depend on a range of variables, perhaps the most critical being the ports of departure and arrival. To give you a couple of examples, cargo shipped from Europe to the East Coast of the USA typically takes around two weeks to arrive at its destination, while that duration can be doubled for freight from Europe to the U.S. West Coast.

FCL is a logistics acronym that stands for full container load. It means that a 20-foot or 40-foot shipping container is occupied by goods belonging to a single shipper.

Sometimes, a shipper has a consignment of goods that will benefit from, or perhaps need to be, transported in isolation. Even if the volume of goods is not sufficient to fill the container, FCL can still be the best option. Indeed, if your shipment is large enough to occupy more than half the space in a 40-foot container, FCL might be the most suitable shipping mode, both in terms of practicality and cost.

The answer depends on several factors, and is not always straightforward. However, when you enquire about shipping with WeFreight, our friendly experts will help you to determine which service will best suit your needs. In general, LCL shipping is for small consignments, from a few cartons to a few pallets, while LCL makes most sense for shipments of more than six or seven pallets.

LCL is a logistics acronym that stands for less-than-container-load. It means that a 20-foot or 40-foot shipping container is filled with smaller consignments of goods belonging to multiple shippers. If you ship LCL, your goods will share container space with other shippers’ consignments.

Value-added services are services which, while not essential for the storage or transportation of your goods, complement our core services such as ocean freight shipping. Examples of value-added services include packing, palletisation, lashing, and crating.

We place no obligation on our customers to take advantage of our value-added services, so you are free, for example, to make your own arrangements for activities such as packing and palletisation, or even for customs clearance for your shipments. However, ocean freight shipping becomes so much simpler when you use a single provider for all the associated processes, and that’s why we offer a full range of value-added as well as core ocean freight services.

These are terms used in LCL ocean freight shipping, to denote the gathering of multiple shipments and their loading into a shipping container before transportation (consolidation), and their unloading and separation (deconsolidation) after arrival at the destination port. These two processes are sometimes known also as stuffing and destuffing.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the most appropriate shipping method will vary depending on the specific circumstances of each individual shipment. However, in general, ocean freight is typically more economical than air freight for large or heavy shipments, while air freight is often the better capacity. Ultimately, the best way to determine which shipping method is right for your needs is to consult with WeFreight, as our experts can help you assess all of the factors involved.

Yes, ocean freight can be used as a shipping method for perishable goods. However, there are a few things to consider when deciding if ocean freight is suitable for perishable cargo like food. The time it takes for the shipment to reach its destination is one factor. If the journey is too long, the food may go bad before it arrives. Temperature control is another important factor. Perishable goods need to be kept at a certain temperature to stay fresh, and this can be difficult to maintain during transit. Ocean freight can be a great option for perishable cargo if these factors are taken into account and the necessary precautions are taken. You can also consider reefer shipping, which is a type of ocean freight that involves transporting perishable goods in refrigerated containers. This ensures that the goods remain fresh during transit and reduces the risk of spoilage. Reefer shipping is often used for food items, but can also be used for other types of perishable goods such as flowers and pharmaceuticals.

Yes, there are limits, and they depend on the type and size of the container, as well as the nature of cargo within. For example, a 20-foot (6-meter) container can typically hold up to 28,000 pounds (12,700 kg) of cargo, but this may vary depending on the factors mentioned above.

There are several different types of containers. The most common type is the ISO Container, which is designed to be used with intermodal transportation. Other types of containers include the Bulk Container, the Flatrack Container, and the Platform Container. Each has its own specific purpose and use.

Working with WeFreight

Depending on the value of your cargo and the shipping company you use, your cargo may or may not be automatically insured. Be sure to ask about insurance when you’re arranging shipping for your cargo. In some cases, you may be able to purchase insurance for your cargo through the shipping company. At WeFreight, we can help you choose the right level of cargo insurance and arrange cover for you.

The most important document for ocean freight is the bill of lading (B/L). This document acts as a contract between the shipper and the carrier and includes all the details of the shipment. The B/L must be signed by an authorized representative of the carrier before the goods are loaded onto the vessel. Aside from the bill of lading, other important documents for ocean freight include:
• Commercial invoices
• Packing lists
• Certificates of origin
• Letters of credit or other payment terms
These documents are typically required by customs authorities in order to clear the goods for import or export

We provide both door-to-door and port-to-port ocean freight services. We can cater to the needs of your business or organisation, whatever they may be.

Moving freight internationally is a complicated exercise. While WeFreight will attempt to include all charges, there may be times when additional charges are incurred. For example, additional charges may come up for customs clearance, storage, port detention, or other related fees. Wherever possible, WeFreight will communicate any additional charges to you so that you know what to expect.

As a leading global forwarder, WeFreight has relationships with many of the world’s leading ocean freight carriers. For a full list of which ocean carriers we work with, partners section on our ocean freight page.

While it is possible to choose which carrier to use, we reserve the right to pick the most suitable carrier for your cargo.

We understand how important it is for you to know where your cargo is at all times. To aid this we have a track and trace solution that allows you to have visibility of your cargo wherever it is in the shipping process.

As a leading global forwarder with offices and operations in many countries around the world, WeFreight is able to offer solutions for your cargo to many countries through our own offices or via carefully selected partners. Please contact us now to find out which countries we can serve.

In addition to ocean freight carriage, we also offer related services including customs clearance, road transportation for your freight, consolidation/deconsolidation, palletisation, and cargo insurance. We also have a plethora of other value-added services that you can utilise as and when needed.

The importance of being environmentally friendly cannot be underestimated and to this extent, WeFreight works with all its partners to ensure that carbon emissions are minimised as much as possible.

While we aim to offer transit times that support your requirements, we are unable to guarantee transit times at this stage. However, we do work with our ocean freight partners to ensure that schedule reliability is a key focus.

Air freight

Depending on the value of your cargo and the air freight company you use, your cargo may or may not be automatically insured. Be sure to ask about insurance when arranging your air freight shipping. In some cases, you may be able to purchase insurance for your cargo through the freight forwarder or airline. At WeFreight, we can help you choose the right level of cargo insurance and arrange cover for you.

While documentation requirements differ from country to country, the following are the minimum you will require for air freight shipping:
• Commercial Invoice
• Air Waybill (AWB)
• Packing List
• Certificate of Origin
• Letter of Credit or other payment terms

As a leading global forwarder, WeFreight has alliances with many of the world’s leading airlines and air freight companies. For a full list of the air cargo carriers we work with, please see the partners section on our air freight page.

While it may be possible to choose which carrier to use, we reserve the right to determine and select the most suitable air freight forwarder for your cargo.

We provide air freight services that include door-to-door or airport-to-airport, whichever suits you best.

We understand how important it is for you to know where your cargo is at all times. Our track and trace solution gives you full end-to-end real-time visibility of all your air freight shipments.

Working with WeFreight

As a leading global forwarder with offices and operations in many countries around the world, WeFreight offers solutions for your cargo in most major territories, either through our own offices or via carefully selected partners. Please contact us for information on which countries we serve.

As a global logistics provider, WeFreight offers you a variety of air cargo logistics solutions, including customs clearance, consolidation, insurance, courier services, charter services, and global cross-trade services. We also have many other value-added services that you can tap into as and when required.

While we aim to offer optimum transit times that support our customers’ requirements, many factors beyond our control make it impossible to offer guarantees. However, we always work with our air cargo partners to ensure schedules are met as often as is possible.

The chargeable weight (CW) of air freight is determined by the gross weight (GW) or the volume weight (VW), whichever is greater. The following formula is used to determine the chargeable weight: Imperial: L x W x H in inches (in) / 165 = VW (in lbs.) Metric: L x W x H in centimetres (cm) / 6,000 = VW (in kgs).

Yes, there are limits to the size and weight of cargo that can be shipped by air freight. Please contact your local WeFreight office for more information on air freight limits.

Road freight

Depending on the value of your cargo and the road shipping carrier you use, your cargo may or may not be automatically insured. Be sure to ask about insurance when you’re arranging road freight transport. At WeFreight, we can help you choose the right level of road freight insurance and arrange cover for you.

WeFreight offers a range of options for road freight, including less than truckload (LTL), full truckload (FTL), in-country and cross-border delivery options, and more.

The importance of being environmentally friendly cannot be underestimated and to this extent, WeFreight works with all its partners to ensure that carbon emissions are minimised as much as possible.

WeFreight works with a range of road freight carriers that provide the services and options that your business requires. These carriers will vary depending on the requirement of your cargo, including the size volume, and ultimate destination.

We understand how important it is for you to know where your cargo is at all times. To aid this we have a track and trace solution that allows you to have visibility of your cargo wherever it is in the shipping process.

As freight forwarders, we look at all available options and make recommendations depending on the size, volume, weight, origin, and destination of your cargo. Road freight is typically used for journeys that involve relatively short distances or where cost is a factor.

Working with WeFreight

WeFreight only works with road freight providers who prioritise the safety of your cargo. Their vehicles are equipped with tracking solutions and anti-tamper devices to ensure that your cargo is secure, safe, and in good condition at all times throughout the shipping process.

In addition to FTL and LTL road freight carriage, WeFreight also offers related services including warehousing and contract logistics, freight consolidation/deconsolidation, cargo insurance, customs clearance, palletisation, packing, and crating. We also have a plethora of value-added services that you can utilise as and when the need arises.

WeFreight works with a range of different road freight providers that can offer the solutions that you are looking for. This includes flatbed, temperature-controlled, and other road freight equipment.

Warehousing & contract logistics

WeFreight operates and/or has access to warehousing and contract logistics facilities in numerous geographic locations. Please contact your local WeFreight office to discuss your warehouse storage requirements.

The safety and security of your goods and cargo are of paramount importance to WeFreight. All our facilities have 24 x 7 security- CCTV monitoring. We only work with 3PL warehousing partners that have safe and secure facilities. Regular inspections by our teams ensure that we manage warehouses to keep your cargo safe.

Our value-added services are part of our contract logistics solutions and are aimed at enhancing customer satisfaction. They include labelling and barcoding, packaging, sorting, kitting, and all types of reverse logistics.

We do offer flexibility for customers to provide their own resources when leasing warehouse space, but this varies from facility to facility. Please check with the relevant WeFreight office to ascertain the warehouse logistics requirements in your region.

Working with WeFreight

We offer a range of options for warehouse storage of your goods, from ambient through to cold storage.

Basic warehouse storage costs are based on the size and volume of your goods. The price will also be impacted by the length of time required for storage and any additional services that are required. For detailed information, please contact your local WeFreight office.

Warehousing comprises all services associated directly with inventory storage and management. Contract logistics covers a much broader scope and involves logistics processes that can include supply chain planning and design, freight transportation, distribution, last-mile delivery, and order processing and fulfillment

All our warehouse facilities offer a range of insurance options. It always makes sense, though, to research the various coverage possibilities and decide which one is applicable for your goods. If you have high-value or perishable goods, for example, you may wish to invest in additional insurance.

Customs clearance

Before any shipment of goods can be imported or exported internationally, the goods are scrutinised by customs officials to ensure they conform to the relevant countries’ rules and regulations. Once satisfied of compliance, the customs authority will clear, or release, the shipment to travel freely across the border. To attain import customs clearance, the exporter or importer, in addition to providing correct and accurately completed documentation to customs officials, will typically be required to pay duties and perhaps taxes levied by the government of the country of import.

All goods being shipped across borders are subject to duties and tariffs that vary according to the applicable commodity (HS) code and the countries they are moving between. Customs officials use the HS code to determine what is being shipped and to apply the applicable tariffs and duties. Your local trade office should be able to provide you with more detailed information on import and export clearance.

The rates of duty differ from one commodity to another depending on what they are and where they come from. The rates also depend on the economic sensitivity of products. Contact your local trade office for more information.

In some countries, WeFreight provides customs clearance services while in others we work with specialised forwarding and clearing agents. Either way, WeFreight will ensure that your cargo is taken care of at every stage of its journey.

Working with WeFreight

If you have a customs clearance agent, you may do the customs processing yourself. Import and export customs clearance is fraught with pitfalls, though, so please check with your local trade office for details of the processes involved.

WeFreight handles your customs clearance procedures from beginning to end to ensure that your goods can be imported or exported seamlessly across borders. Our customs clearance specialists reduce the risk of enroute border delays, so your shipments arrive at their final destination on time and in full.

While lists may differ from one border entry point to another, in general, goods transiting international frontiers should be accompanied by the following documents
• Packing list
• Bill of lading
• Certificate of origin
• Transport insurance certificate
• Customs invoice
• Proof of delivery

Project logistics

Yes, you can track your project logistics cargo in transit. There are various ways to do this, including GPS tracking, which can give you real-time information on the location of your shipment. You can also track shipments using online tools such as shipping manifests and consignment tracking systems. WeFreight uses a tracking system for project cargo transportation to allow you to monitor where your shipment is at all times.

Project logistics, by its very nature, allows for the movement of heavy, oversize, and unusual cargo. However, certain rules and restrictions apply even on these types of freight shipment. Please contact your local WeFreight office for more details of restrictions applicable to our project cargo services.

Working with WeFreight

At WeFreight, we have a wealth of experience in handling project logistics cargo. Our team has worked on some of the world’s most complex and challenging projects, ensuring that the goods are delivered on time and within budget. So whether you are looking for a one-off shipment or a long-term partner for your project logistics needs, WeFreight is the right choice.
